How To Create A Monthly Receipt Jar With Your Glowforge

For years I have kept my monthly receipts in this jar. Each month I take them out, flatten them, and put them in that month’s folder. One day I was sitting at my desk while my Glowforge Pro was whirling and the jar was in my line of sight, then it hit me – I can etch the cork lid with a cute saying! So I did, and I thought you might like it too. I’m sharing the hand-lettered .SVG in our shop for only $4.99, remember, all of our .SVG cut files come with a commercial license meaning you can make and sell the things you create with our files, you just can’t sell our files!

No Crumb Tray Needed

The Glowforge can’t cut/engrave anything over 1/2″, and this cork lid is .96″ to be exact. Which means it’s too high to engrave on the crumb tray but too low to engrave without it. So we need to remove the crumb tray and add some wood underneath it to bring it up above where the crumb tray would sit. Which is why digital calipers are a must have tool when you own a Glowforge. I added a few pieces of scrap wood to the cork, which measured 1.49″, perfect. Now subtract the crumb tray height from the new height to find the focus height = .18″

Cork + Wood = 1.49″ minus
Crumb Tray = 1.31″ equals
Focus Height = .18″

Cork Settings

To engrave cork with your Glowforge I found these settings ideal. Keep in mind the focus height will always change based on your project.

Speed: 1000
Power: 20
Lines Per Inch: 270

Seal

Seal with a gloss spray, my new favorite is this fast-drying Polyurethane. If you don’t, the black burn from the engraved area can smudge off onto the cork!
