DIY Wedding | Brad + Rachel

“The way that Rachel looked at Brad during the wedding ceremony brought me shivers. His radiant smile back to her was just magical. These two wonderful people were married at The Barn at High Point Farms in Chattanooga, Tennessee. This rustic, vintage wedding venue was the perfect place as they said their vows under a mature on the edge of the property; it was decorated with items from The Barn combined with decor from the family. The entire day was filled with laughter, happy tears and song. Rachel’s family is incredibly talented in many facets including photography and music. Rachel’s Father had everyone in complete silence at the reception as he sang ‘Butterfly Kisses’. He even had this photographer holding back some tears!!” –Erin Morrison Photography

What is your favorite wedding day memory?

My favorite wedding day memory was the ceremony. I had my close friends and family decorate using all my handmade decorations, and I had not seen it all put together until I walked down the aisle. I was overwhelmed at it’s beauty when I saw it as I rounded the corner of the barn – they did such a good job bringing my vision to life! And that was just the start! I locked eyes with Brad as I walked down the aisle and his happiness was contagious! I’ll never forget that look on his face. Our officiant, Rev. Stan Elliott, really did a superb job leading us all in a God-centered service. Before the wedding, we had a few discussions about the energy we wanted to create for us and our guests as we exchanged vows, and his guidance brought us all to a place of peace and joy. The ceremony was more than I ever could have imagined it being!

What did you DIY for your wedding?

My wedding included SO many DIY projects. For the ceremony, we had a family friend cut logs into various-sized log rounds. I then used a burner to write out portions of 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 on the pieces. I placed those log rounds with verses from the passage along the aisle, so as I stepped closer to my groom, I’d be literally taking a step in the direction of Godly love {patience, kindness, etc.}. I hung glass bottles Brad and I had saved from sparkling water down the aisle and added some flowers made out of wood I purchased at a nearby store.

The centerpieces were made using the log rounds we had cut, some old mason jars my mom had painted then aged, then some printed engagement photos on mini easels. Instead of using table numbers, I borrowed an idea from a friend’s wedding and named each table. I handmade each table name using textured paper to make tent cards, then used fine tip markers to write, completed with a ribbon to add some elegance. The titles were places or events significant in our story, so each card had a description on the back that explained why each were special to us.

Did you have a something old, new, borrowed and blue?

I was so blessed to have my Grandmother, who was unable to attend, give me a laced handkerchief with blue stitching for my something old, which I wrapped around my bouquet. My something blue was a lovely patch located under my dress my Mother-in-Law made for me with my monogram on it and date of the wedding. My something new was my dress and veil, and my something borrowed was my mother’s diamond earrings and bracelet that I treasured so dearly.

Any advice for brides currently in the planning process?

My advice to brides currently planning their weddings is to make weekly to do lists. I was feeling overwhelmed the first two weeks of my engagement, and a friend of mine told me to make weekly to do lists and to solely focus on those tasks, not the entire list. That was the best advice I could have received, and I want to share that with others. Prioritize what needs to be done first, then make your weekly lists, and start crossing things off one list at a time. -Rachel, the bride
