Destination Wedding Attire Tips From Weddings by FunJet

Today, Weddings by FunJet is kindly sharing their best tips on destination wedding attire with us. Read over the list below and keep them in mind to ensure that your beach wedding fashion is flawless. You can even pin one of these images to save this list so you can refer to it later on. These tips are for the bride and groom but will also be just as helpful for the rest of the wedding party and guests.

The Basics

  • The bridal couple’s attire should match: the groom shouldn’t look more formal than the bride, or more casual. Discuss your look together before you go shopping.
  • Bride: heavy satins, stiff silk, taffeta, brocades and polyester will weigh you down and make you sweat, as will dresses with corsets, a lot of beading or lots of layers. Discuss the best beach options with your bridal shop stylist to see what they offer.
  • Groom: pick lightweight fabrics like linen and cotton, in light colors, especially if wearing a full suit. Jackets aren’t necessary.
  • Guests should take their cue from the setting when deciding what is appropriate to wear while still looking respectful and in tune with the occasion and destination.

Casual is Natural

  • Destination weddings are naturally more casual, but you can easily dress up a beach look by wearing flowing and breathable fabrics, like linen, chiffon, organza, crepe and light silks. Adding fashionable accessories like hats, statement jewelry, shawls, and light jackets will add to the overall look.
  • Bride: fancy ball gowns don’t belong on the beach. If you want to stay formal, A-lines, empire, sheath, mermaid or trumpet style dresses are best. Consider cocktail length or slip dresses and halter tops for a more casual look. A casual silhouette can be dressed up with airy ruffles or lace. A veil might be overly formal for the beach, and can get caught up in the breeze. Instead, accent your look with dramatic jewelry or hair accessories like a sparkling tiara or headband.
  • Groom: if you’re going for a more formal look, a linen suit in light colors is your best bet. Forget the tie. A crisp white cotton button-down, guayabera, or even Hawaiian shirt over casual linen pants is a classic beach wedding look.

Bare Your Feet

  • Women: sandals, wedge heels or flats will make for easier walking on uneven surfaces like beaches and gardens. Stilettos may give you extra height, but will sink in the sand and may get stuck if you’re on a deck or pier.
  • Men: leather sandals or shoes you can wear without socks are a great beach look, such as espadrilles or deck shoes.
  • It can be difficult to walk in the sand in fancy shoes, so you should consider kicking them off and going bare, just for the ceremony. Sand and dirty feet can damage fine shoes, make time to wash your feet after a bare foot ceremony if you’ve chosen an expensive pair.

Sun Protection

  • You’ll be out in the sun throughout the day so consider sunscreen part of your wedding party! You can even leave some out on a table with a cute sign to keep your guests protected as well.
  • Bride: A light shawl or shrug will keep the sun off your shoulders and give some extra warmth after the sun goes down.
  • Groom: Hats are a great option. Jump on the fedora bandwagon. A light-colored hat is not only fashionable, it’s beach appropriate.
  • Parasols can provide terrific sun protection, as well as look darling in pictures. Providing them for the bridal party and elderly guests is a nice touch.

Packing done Right

  • The fabrics perfect for tropical wedding attire tend to wrinkle easily, no matter how careful you are.
  • Call ahead to ensure that your hotel will be able to provide an iron or steamer so that you can release those wrinkles. Some even provide the service for you. Your Weddings by Funjet Concierge can actually arrange this service before you leave home.
  • Consider “rolling” your clothes instead of folding them in your suit case to avoid more wrinkling. When you arrive in your hotel immediately unpack and hang up your clothes. If there is ever a time to look your best – it’s during your wedding weekend.
