DIY Your Newlywed Holiday Cards With Shutterfly!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year… holiday card time that is! Sending out creative and thoughtful Christmas cards is one of my favorite traditions of the season. I absolutely love spending time creating the perfect holiday card to send out to my friends and family, to commemorate the year that’s passed. But what I love more is receiving holiday cards in the mail! I love the envelopes, I love the stamps, I love opening them, I love reading all the family updates and seeing pretty pictures of my loved ones (the hubby knows not to open them without me, lol). As part of my holiday decor, I create a special place in my home to display the cards I collect and believe it or not – I save every single one. It’s my little way of sharing and celebrating with my loved ones, especially the ones that don’t live close by. If you are sentimental like me, you’ll love this DIY tutorial I created for saving your wedding cards because I originally designed it for holiday cards. By now you are realizing how important this tradition is to me, so I was completely thrilled when Shutterfly asked me to design and share my favorite newlywed holiday cards for 2015!

Get Creative + Have Fun

Today I’ve used only 4 images to create 8 cards, to share how many different ways you can truly customize your holiday cards with Shutterfly’s wide range of options. Two are of me and the hubs (one of our wedding and one of a blog shoot) and two are of our gorgeous bridal blogger Shea’s wedding that took place just a few week ago photographed by Shots by Cheyenne. Get creative using the simple tools on their site like photo filters, trim options, foil designs, back-of-card layouts, custom envelope liners, and even photo address labels. I had so much fun designing these cards… and I know you will too!

Married Christmas

Shutterfly has absolutely adorable newlywed holiday cards… but it’s easy to make any card design into a “newlywed” card! Simply use your wedding or honeymoon pictures and add sayings like:

  • Love, The Newlyweds
  • The New Mr & Mrs
  • Our First Christmas
  • Love, The Groom and his Bride
  • The Carreiros – Established 2011 (last name + married year)

How-To:

  1. Choose your favorite holiday photo card from over 500 designs on Shutterfly.com. From vertical and horizontal to square styles and even ornaments! The foil choices are my personal favorite.
  2. You can upload your photos to Shutterfly from almost anywhere… iPhoto, your computer, Facebook, and even Instagram! Once they are uploaded you simply add them to your card, where you can easily crop and adjust to fit the design. You can use one photo or multiple photos, some designs even include images on the back of the card.
  3. Add your personal information. Holiday cards are the perfect way to send family updates and having a new MR + MRS status is a huge update! One of your favorite engagement, wedding or honeymoon photos is the ideal choice to commemorate this special year.
  4. Never ordered custom cards online? Shutterfly wants you to give it a try – enter CARD4U at checkout to get 1 card for free!

How To Pluralize Your Last Name

Just a friendly grammar reminder: your last name does not require an apostrophe on your holiday card.

When you’d like to pluralize a family name (a proper noun), in most cases we just add an “s” to the end. For example: The Carreiros, The Shoemakers, and The Smiths.

However, when a family name ends in s, x, ch, sh, or z; we form the plural by adding an “es” to the end. For example: The Joneses, The Churches, and The Therouxes.

Happy New Year Cards

This is a fun new trend we’ve seen over the past few years and I think it gained momentum from those who didn’t get their Christmas cards out on time, so thanks to all the late birds because I love it! This is a fantastic option for those who might be getting married this month and won’t have their photography back in time for the holidays. As long as your Happy New Year Cards land in your friends mail boxes by January 31 – it’s all good.

Don’t Forget About The Return Address!

Shutterfly has adorable options for making personalized return address stickers that match your holiday cards!

Newlywed Tip: Many times newlyweds are moving into a new home after their wedding, so this is the perfect time to include a message on your holiday card about your new address! You can even include a separate return address sticker inside the card so your friends and family can save it in their rolodex and not have to cut up your envelope.
