A funny little fact that you might not know about me is that I was a traveling wedding hair dresser for 12 years before I started this blog. I love wedding hair and it was my favorite to work on behind the chair. So today I’m sharing my professional hair tips with you on wearing gorgeous flower crowns within your wedding day hair style! Flower crowns are the epitome of romance. They embody all things that are lovely and being able to wear a gorgeous, well fitted spray of flowers can make any woman feel like a goddess. With boho styles trending, we are starting to see amazing flower crowns worn in real weddings (not just styled shoots) and we are all about it!

What Type Of Hair Style Works Best
From full crowns to partial crowns, large crowns and dainty crowns – there will be a flower fit for almost any wedding hair style. My favorites are the ones pictured here, all down and wavy, side styles and low buns. Your flower crown should be an accent to your wedding day hairstyle, not the focus. So that you can take it off when you need to and not loose the look of your style, which is why all down or side styles work out so well.
I’m totally obsessing over these half-crowns! A full flower crown is quite the statement and can even be heavy to wear, but these side crowns are just adorable and a terrific option for a lighter look.
What Hair Color Looks Best
All hair colors will look fabulous with flowers! If you want your flowers to blend into your hair for a more subtle look, choose color depths that match the depth of your hair color. For example brunets would match beautifully with deeper reds and burgundies, but if you are looking for your flowers to really pop – go the opposite. Blondes would look amazing with bright pinks, red heads would look fabulous with shades of white and brunets would look stunning with pops of yellow.
Make a point to talk with your florist (and your hair dresser) before you make any final decisions as some flowers might not be in season and some won’t last out of water.
Getting The Look
Most crowns will be made of a thick wire that can be shaped and molded to your head, but bobby pins are almost a necessity and will give you an added feeling of stability. Make sure to hair spray your style BEFORE you put on your crown… NO hair spray on the fresh flowers themselves, it’s not a good combo. Don’t keep your flower crown in a refrigerator with food, as food can cause some flowers to brown. Hands off – try your hardest to keep your fingers out of the blooms as our natural oils can brown the flowers and touching them repeatedly can bruise them.
Making your own flower crowns can be easy and lots of fun. However, since most of them need to be assembled the morning of the event – if you are the bride, adding this to your to-do list can be stressful, so leave it to your florist if you can. In general, making flower crowns is pretty straight forward but I found some really awesome DIY tutorials for them across the web just in case you’d like to try:
- Great tutorial from Brides on how to make a gorgeous flower crown using real flowers.
- And another great one from Design Sponge.

Love the flower crown idea but not sure if you want to rock it as the bride? What about having your bridesmaids all wear, dainty little crowns like these? Ohh… and don’t forget about flower crowns for your fur babies!
