Wedding Hair Tips // The Top Knot, Bun

A funny little fact that you might not know about me is that I was a traveling wedding hair dresser for 12 years before I started this blog. I love wedding hair and it was my favorite to work on behind the chair. So today I’m sharing my professional hair tips with you on wearing a gorgeous “top knot” for your wedding day hair style! Top Knot, Classic Bun, Ballerina Bun, Crown Bun… they all mean pretty much the same thing; gorgeous. This hair style is classically bridal and effortlessly stylish. It’s perfectly sculpted strands will give you an all-day look to love… that almost any bride can pull off with ease.

What Type Of Hair Works Best

Absolutely ALL hair types will work wonderfully for this style. The only requirement is that your hair should be about chin length or longer, so it can be formed into the bun. Thick, medium, thin weights will all work – thin just needs a little help from this awesome tool. Dry or shinny? Both work, if your hair is dry you can just add a little shine spray to your finished style.

Another thing to mention with this hair style is that it looks fabulous if you are planning to wear a wedding dress with a high neckline or lots of detailing around the top. Since your hair style won’t be in the way, your dress can truly shine.

What Hair Color Looks Best

ALL hair colors will look stunning with this style. From all one shade, to highlights and ombrés – this classic look will accentuate them all perfectly. We sure are on a roll – all hair types and all colors – this style scores high in my book!

To visually get an idea of what your hair color will look like in this style, just search your color + top knot on Pinterest, ie. “blonde ombre top knot”… and you’ll find lots of examples.

Getting The Look

There are so many different, beautiful ways that you can wear a top knot. From a glamourous bun that is perfectly sculpted and tightly bound, to a more loose “looking” wrap, maybe even embellished with a braid. Take your favorite pictures into your stylist to make sure they know exactly what type of bun you are looking for. This is also a wonderful style option for all your bridesmaids to wear.

If you are looking to tackle this style yourself, maybe for your bridal shower or bachelorette party – you must start with dirty hair, dirty hair holds the best. You’ll need a brush to backcomb with, a strong pony tail holder, possibly a hair donut, about 6-10 bobby pins, and firm hold hair spray. Instead of me describing how to continue, I’ve found some great DIY “top knot” links for you:

Just in case you aren’t into the “Top Knot” maybe your groom will be? It’s hot right?
