wedding flowers | the peony

peony |pēənē| noun: a herbaceous or shrubby type plant of northtemperate regions, which has long been cultivated for its showy flowers. They have compound, deeply lobed leaves, and large, often fragrant flowers, ranging from red to white or yellow, blooming in late spring and early summer.

the peony as a wedding flower

The peony flower is named after Paeon, the Greek god of medicine and healing. Asclepius was Paeon’s teacher and mentor, but became jealous of his star pupil. Legend tells that Zeus had to actually save Paeon from the wrath of Asclepius, and he did so by turning Paeon into a peony flower. Which is why peony is also spelled paeony.

Wouldn’t this board below be the perfect theme for a bridal shower!

peony in a tea cup... perfect for a bridal shower

I love peonies. Their outside petals look so loose and free, yet their center exudes a strength and stability like no other flower. There are so many variations within the species of a peony… the most popular being the Sarah Bernhardt Flower {as shown in pink in the bouquet and tea cup above}.
